The trendlet
The pixie undercut - also known as the Robyn Wright (named after the actress who portrays first lady Claire Underwood on Netflix's House of Cards) - is the 'do of the summer. This particular version, with its flirty bangs and very tapered sides, was created for Wright by her Los Angeles stylist, Paul Norton. And this summer, it'll add a dose of '60s chic to '90s minimal duds.
Where's it come from?
The cutting-edge coif is closely related to the more severe pixie. Actress Jean Seberg was among the first women to confidently rock the cut after her locks were lopped to play Joan of Arc in the 1957 film Saint Joan. The movie flopped, but the boyish cut became the signature style of '60s style influencers like Twiggy and Mia Farrow.
There also were noteworthy pixies in each successive decade: Sandy Duncan in the '70s, Annie Lennox in the '80s, Toni Braxton in the '90s, and Halle Berry in the early 2000s.
Who's wearing it?
Today's pixie is a grown-out version of pixies past. So it's shaping into a favorite of women who like their natural look to come in an easy and versatile package. Famous pixie wearers include Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Watson, and Jennifer Hudson. Rihanna periodically pops in and out of her pixie look, too.
Would Elizabeth wear it?
Not my speed. Also, it would require a relaxer to straighten, and I'd have to sleep with a scarf tied on my head to keep my pixie in place. And that equals: Too. Much. Work.
Should you wear it?
If you want to pepper your no-nonsense business look with a little play, this look is for you. The rounder the cut, the softer the look. Now, go show off that face.
