Burlco freeholders table proposed budget

Burlington County freeholders voted during a crowded, contentious meeting last night to table a $224.1 million budget proposal that would lay off 50 employees and cut the tax levy by $500,000.

Burlington County freeholders voted during a crowded, contentious meeting last night to table a $224.1 million budget proposal that would lay off 50 employees and cut the tax levy by $500,000.

The board voted to accept a budget amendment proposed by Freeholder Jim Wujcik that would instead drop the tax levy by between $350,000 and $375,000, return $900,000 to the surplus, and restore several positions.

Much of that restored funding was possible after the board learned yesterday that it had an extra $621,000 as a result of a lease bond payment for which it was no longer responsible. The five freeholders will meet next Wednesday for a public hearing on the proposed amendment.
