N.J. bear policy to include a hunt, after public input

Acting New Jersey Environmental Commissioner Bob Martin yesterday approved a policy including the state's first bear hunt in five years.

TRENTON - Acting New Jersey Environmental Commissioner Bob Martin yesterday approved a policy including the state's first bear hunt in five years.

He said research by the state Fish and Game Council showed a growing black-bear population and an increasing number of serious bear incidents, including attacks on domestic and farm animals.

The public may comment on the plan in writing for 60 days or in person at a May 11 hearing. The Bear Education and Resource Group, a New Jersey wildlife advocacy group, said it was launching a campaign objections to a hunt.
