Former union treasurer accused of embezzlement

A former treasurer of the teachers union local that represents employees of Lincoln Technical Institute was indicted yesterday by acting U.S. Attorney Laurie Magid on six counts of embezzling union funds and eight counts of making false statements to the federal government.

A former treasurer of the teachers union local that represents employees of Lincoln Technical Institute was indicted yesterday by acting U.S. Attorney Laurie Magid on six counts of embezzling union funds and eight counts of making false statements to the federal government.

The federal indictment charges that, from Oct. 1, 2002, to Feb. 1, Peter Rhein embezzled more than $40,000 from the American Federation of Teachers AFL-CIO, Local Union 3845, Unit Lincoln Technical Institute. Lincoln has three campuses in Philadelphia.

Rhein, 42, of Philadelphia, could not be reached for comment. The case was investigated by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Labor-Management Standards.
