A man wanted on an attempted-murder charge in Maryland surrendered early yesterday after a standoff at a Bordentown Township motel, according to the New Jersey State Police.

The charges against Nicholas Hipley stemmed from an earlier fight, Sgt. Stephen Jones said.

The standoff began around 6 p.m. Wednesday after police learned the resident of Perry Hall, Md., was staying with his wife at the Econo Lodge on Route 130. The woman told authorities that her husband was alone in the room with a 12-gauge shotgun, Jones said.

Two blasts from the gun were heard during the standoff, but no one was injured, Jones said. A police negotiator talked to Hipley, who surrendered around 2 a.m.
