Four local charter schools were among 53 charters nationwide named a "National Charter School of the Year" by the Center for Education Reform during ceremonies Wednesday in Washington.

Honors were won by Independence Charter School, a K-8 school in Center City; The Laboratory Charter School of Communication and Languages, a K-8 charter with campuses in Northern Liberties and West Philadelphia; Mathematics, Science & Technology Community Charter School, a K-12 charter in the Northeast; and Renaissance Academy-Edison, a K-12 charter in Phoenixville.

The Center for Education Reform, a school-choice organization in Washington, said the honored charters were recognized for their innovation, achievement and dedication to the charter movement. - Martha Woodall
