A 41-year-old man has been arrested and charged with castrating a paraplegic during an argument over a woman Monday night in Southwest Philadelphia, police said Tuesday.

The 43-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, remained in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania,

Edgar Bonilla, 41, has been charged with attempted murder and related offenses in the attack, said Officer Jillian Russell, a police spokeswoman.

Police said officers responding to a report of a stabbing found the victim about 7:10 p.m. at an assisted living facility in the 6200 block of Eastwick Avenue.

Bonilla, who also lives on the 6200 block of Eastwick Avenue, had a dispute with the victim over a female resident, police said.

Court records show Bonilla has an arrest history on burglary charges that have been withdrawn and robbery charges that have been dismissed. In 2004 he pleaded guilty to defiant trespassing, resulting in a 12-month probation sentence, according to the records.
