PHILADELPHIA Mayor Nutter and local officials on Tuesday opened a 1.6-mile-long asphalt path along the Delaware River that is a link in a planned 750-mile network of bicycle and walking trails in the Philadelphia region.

The $2.5 million Port Richmond Trail runs along North Delaware Avenue from Allegheny Avenue through an industrial area that includes the Tioga Marine Terminal.

The federal Environmental Protection Agency also awarded the city $200,000 to plan the cleanup and restoration of three former industrial sites near the trail: the former Philadelphia Coke Co., 4501 Richmond St.; the former Rohm & Haas chemical factory at 5000 Richmond; and the former Edgewater Dyeing & Finishing Co. between Torresdale Avenue and Worrell Street. - Paul Nussbaum
