Homemade bomb causes Queen Village evacuation

Residents of South Philadelphia's Queen Village section were evacuated Monday night when a wired gas can attached to a timer that was plugged into an electrical outlet was found at a property, police said.

Residents of South Philadelphia's Queen Village section were evacuated Monday night when a wired gas can attached to a timer that was plugged into an electrical outlet was found at a property, police said.

The device was discovered shortly after 9 p.m. in the 700 block of South Fourth Street when PGW workers responded to a report of a gas odor, police said. Houses on either side of the property and an apartment building across the street were evacuated.

The police department's bomb squad responded to the scene and no injuries were reported.
