A West Philadelphia man was killed outside a nightclub near the University of Pennsylvania campus early Tuesday, police said.

Patrol officers from the 18th District and Penn police responded to a report of a person with a gun inside Copabanana at 40th and Spruce Streets around 1:30 a.m., police said.

Outside, they found Timothy Cary, 31, lying on the sidewalk. He had been shot in the head, chest, a leg, and both hands. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

According to a letter sent to parents of Penn students and posted online by the Daily Pennsylvanian, Penn staff monitoring video surveillance spotted a man running south from the scene and alerted police.

The suspect was caught on the 4000 block of Pine Street by Penn police.

Arrested and charged with murder is Corey Gaynor, 26, of 1200 block of South 54th Street, police said Wednesday morning.

Police said the shooting was sparked by an argument but no details were released.
