Street closings to disrupt Center City traffic

Getting around Center City is likely to be a little trickier than usual over the next couple of days, thanks to street closings prompted by a pair of celebrations.

From 7 p.m. Thursday through 9 a.m. Saturday, Broad Street will be closed to southbound traffic between Locust and Spruce Streets. One northbound lane will be closed along that stretch. Opera Philadelphia will be marking its 40th anniversary Friday with a celebration outside the Academy of Music at Broad and Locust. For details, visit www.operaphila.org/gala.

Market Street between 18th and 20th Streets will be closed from noon to 1 p.m. Friday for a rally for the Hero Thrill Show, the annual event that raises money for the college education of the children of police officers and firefighters who die in the line of duty. All cross streets will remain open, but there will be traffic congestion in the area.

The rally will include demonstrations by the Mounted Unit, SWAT, the police drill team, and firefighters. The Thrill Show itself will be held the following weekend, at noon Sept. 20 outside the Wells Fargo Center. Tickets for the show are available at police and fire stations citywide or through www.herothrillshow.org. - Inquirer staff
