DA: Delco doc sold drugs to undercover cops

A Media internist was charged Wednesday with illegally dispensing prescription drugs, including Adderall, Percocet and Oxycodone, to two undercover detectives for three months this year.

The Delaware County District Attorney's Office charged Lawrence Wean, 60, with insurance fraud and illegal drug distribution. He was ordered held in the county jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Wean, who practices in an office in the 600 block of Baltimore Pike, saw the two undercover county detectives as patients from July to October of this year, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

He provided them with prescription pain killers, muscle relaxants and anti-anxiety medication upon request without asking about their medical histories, examining or testing the men, or giving them diagnoses for their complaints of pain, according to the affidavit. Wean would charge up to $255 per appointment.

Three years ago Wean was one of two doctors found to be negligent in the 2007 death of a 52-year-old Media woman who died from sepsis and inflammation of her abdominal wall, according to court records. A jury found Wean and the other doctor failed to treat her case with urgency and awarded $3.8 million.
