Mummers club brawl escalates

Five people were injured; 1 man is in police custody.

Five people were injured and one was taken into custody early Saturday after a brawl erupted inside a Mummers clubhouse and spilled onto the streets of South Philadelphia.

Two men began fighting shortly after midnight inside the 2nd Street Shooters NYB club at 1438 S. Front St., in the Pennsport area, police said.

Multiple witnesses told investigators that, as the fight escalated, security guards working the party "pushed everyone outside."

A melee then touched off on the street and spread to the surrounding area, police said.

A man, 18, was struck in the head with an unknown object and taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, for treatment of a laceration.

A woman, 19, was hit once by an unknown man and taken to Methodist Hospital, where she required multiple stitches for a cut above her lip.

Two other men - aged 18 and 22 - were also treated at Methodist after unknown suspects struck them, police said.

A fifth victim, an 18-year-old man, was knocked to the ground and hit his head on the pavement. While he was lying there, a 22-year-old man allegedly stepped on his stomach.

That man was arrested and will be charged with simple assault, police said. His identity was not immediately released.

More suspects were still being sought Saturday, and police described the investigation as ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Philadelphia police.
