CHESTER A Widener University senior has been recognized for his civic involvement in the city of Chester.
Viraga Perera, of Colombo, Sri Lanka, who lives in Chester, has been named the Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a national organization focused on the public purpose of higher education.
Perera has spent about 300 hours at the College Access Center in Chester recruiting volunteers to help students and adults prepare for college. He also tutors at the center.
Perera is a dual electrical engineering and physics major and a member of the Presidential Service Corps/Bonner Leaders Program at Widener. He is working to develop a diversity certificate program for students through the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.
In addition, he is a founding president of the debate society and a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, Sigma Pi Sigma National Physics Honor Society, Tau Kappa Epsilon, LOGOS-Christian Ministries, the Widener Chorale, and the Widener men's rugby team.
