Visitation was set for 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 25, at St. Anne's Church, 2328 E. Lehigh Ave., Philadelphia, before a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass there, with interment in Calvary Cemetery in Cherry Hill.
Vince Fenerty, executive director of the PPA, said in an e-mail, "Jeff was a conscientious and dedicated employee. He was loved and well respected by his coworkers."
"He will be sadly missed," Fenerty wrote, "by all who were blessed enough to know him."
Authority spokesman Marty O'Rourke said Mr. Bayers, who worked the midnight-to-8 a.m. shift, was pronounced dead at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital at 8:48 a.m.
"A tragic accident," O'Rourke said, one that is still under investigation.
About 6:50 a.m., Mr. Bayers was pinned under a tow truck driven by an unidentified PPA worker as it backed over him in a PPA lot at 2500 Weccacoe Ave., police said.
Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Bayers grew up in the Mayfair neighborhood, graduated from Disston Elementary School and Frankford High School, and on March 14, 2015, marked his 10th year as a PPA employee.
He is survived by his wife, Johanna; sons Kevin and John; daughter Allison; a sister; and a grandchild.
O'Rourke said donations may be sent to the Fund for the Benefit of the Children of Jeffrey Bayers, Philadelphia Federal Credit Union, 12800 Townsend Rd., Philadelphia 19154-9738.
