SEPTA GENERAL manager Joe Casey is taking a Regional Rail ride off into the sunset.

The agency announced yesterday that Casey is retiring after eight years at the helm and 32 years overall with SEPTA. Casey's last day will be Sept. 30, three days after Pope Francis leaves town.

Prior to being named general manager in 2008, Casey, 59, served as SEPTA's chief financial officer and treasurer. He also held senior management positions in Internal Audit and Finance.

"During my time as general manager, I committed our organization to improve the customer experience - and I can say with confidence that these efforts will only grow stronger moving forward," Casey said in a statement. "With dedicated funding for capital improvements, resulting from state Act 89, we will have resources to further enhance the riding experience for our customers, improve reliability and preserve the transit system for future generations."

SEPTA board chair Pasquale "Pat" Deon commended Casey for helping to change the public perception of the agency as a top-heavy, unfriendly transit system.

"Joe has led SEPTA through challenging times, while consistently improving SEPTA's performance, customer service and overall public perception," Deon said in a statement. "His leadership and expertise have been keys to moving SEPTA forward."

A SEPTA spokesman said the board is expected to name Casey's replacement at its regular meeting in September.
