A life-insurance policy that poses big problems

Chickens are coming home to roost after 2 decades.

D

EAR HARRY: I just discovered that my brother took out a life-insurance policy on me about 19 years ago. He did this by pretending to be me. It was easy because neither the agent nor the doctor knew me. The premiums have been paid right up to today. Now the chickens are coming home to roost. He has a terminal disorder and was given a few months to live. He's worried that his wife won't be able to get paid because I'm the one insured on the policy. He wants my help in allowing his wife to file a claim under my name. This also will require a death certificate in my name, as well. They insist that I have nothing to fear as long as I play dumb. Harry, I almost went to jail, years ago, when he tried to collect on a fake lottery ticket using my name. Am I in trouble if I play dumb?

WHAT HARRY SAYS: This guy is trouble with a capital T! I have no idea why he did this. You can just do nothing and stay as far away from them as possible, because you have done nothing wrong. However, this is a dangerous position. If the company discovers what happened, you could be in a bad position trying to explain your situation. If you know the company or the agent, make contact. If not, notify the fraud division of the Insurance Department at 717-975-9074. Protect yourself.
