Philly man accused of defrauding SNAP program

A 51-year-old Philadelphia man was indicted Thursday for allegedly defrauding the government out of more than $1 million in food-assistance benefits, federal prosecutors said.

A 51-year-old Philadelphia man was indicted Thursday for allegedly defrauding the government out of more than $1 million in food-assistance benefits, federal prosecutors said.

Mohammed Uddin was charged with 15 counts of wire fraud and 13 counts of trafficking in food-assistance benefits. Uddin ran Al Madina Halal Meat & Grocery in the city's Castor section and allegedly purchased the benefits from customers in exchange for cash.

Prosecutors said that between January 2012 and September 2015, Uddin unlawfully obtained more than $1 million in benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps.
