Reader can't bank on these people

Her financial institution stole more than $200 from her in three years.

EAR HARRY: I am a poor mathematician. My addition and subtraction skills are all but completely gone. My daughter recently persuaded me to let her look over my checkbook for the last couple of years. My bank stole money from me! Every time I made a deposit where my total was smaller than it should be, the bank kept the difference. Where my total was larger than it should be, the bank ignored my total. She figured that the bank stole more than $200 from me in three years. I went to see my branch manager, who said she would investigate. Last week, she called me and said that it was out of her hands and she could not refer me to anyone. I called the Department of Banking and was told that an investigation was going on and I'd have to wait to be notified further. What's going on here, Harry?

WHAT HARRY SAYS: It looks as though some banks are not satisfied to do their business honestly. Recently, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau nailed one bank for similar practices. The bank will reimburse about $11 million to a large group of customers. This was in addition to a whopping fine of $3 million. Thefts like yours were in addition to overcharges for NSF checks, overdraft fees and monthly maintenance fees. Stay on top of the Banking Department.
