A former township official in Chester County was charged with illegal dumping of chemicals, state prosecutors said Friday.

Scott Cannon, 56, is accused of discharging at least 1,000 gallons of magnesium chloride on the grounds of the public works facility in Tredyffrin Township, where he served as director of public works from November 2011 to February 2014.

The chemicals, which killed grass and shrubbery on the property, were supposed to be disposed of in a government-approved landfill. Magnesium chloride is used to treat road salt.

Cannon, of Glen Mills, was released on his own recognizance after a preliminary arraignment Friday. His preliminary hearing was set for Jan. 15. - Robert Moran
