2 crashes in city involve cop cars

One officer was confirmed to have been injured, condition unknown.

A PHILADELPHIA Highway Patrol officer was injured, and three police vehicles were damaged, in two crashes about 10 minutes apart last night.

About 8:50 p.m., an officer was injured in a collision with a fire engine at Castor and Erie avenues in Juniata Park, police said.

FOX 29 reported that the officer was taken to Temple University Hospital. The officer's condition was not immediately released.

About an hour later and 4 miles away, a driver apparently trying to flee from authorities in Holmesburg crashed into three police vehicles, police said.

Police said the second crash happened at Rhawn Street and Torresdale Avenue, near Holmesburg Prison.

Chief Inspector Scott Small, on his way to the scene around 9 p.m., said that it was too soon to know exactly what happened but that the driver may have intentionally run into the squad cars.

Police took a suspect into custody, Small said. It was not immediately known whether anyone was injured.
