Tennis team wins national title

WAYNE A team based in Wayne won the title at the 2015 U.S. Tennis Association Junior Team Tennis 14-and-under intermediate national championship. The event was held in Cayce, S.C., from Thursday through Sunday.

The team, known as the Red Warriors, plays out of Radnor Racket Club and is coached by Ruth Dickinson. "They would say to me . . . if we totally play out of our brains, we could win," said Dickinson. "They just kept believing. They pulled it off."

Players Claire Burke of Malvern; Kanon Ciarrocchi, Ethan Lee and Cole Wolf, all of Bryn Mawr; Abigail Frantz and Alex Weiss, both of Wayne; and Cassidy Landau of Devon defeated a team from Madison, Conn., 49-41, in the championship match.

"It is a really close group of kids, who deserve it," said Dickinson. They have already been asking when they can play again, she said.

Thirty-two teams with 250 players from across the country competed in 14-and-under and 18-and-under championships in intermediate and advanced play divisions. - Mari A. Schaefer
