High school football rivals collect money

for food drive

MEDIA Two longtime high school football rivals collaborated last month to raise $1,500 for a holiday food drive.

Haverford and Upper Darby have been football foes since 1921, and Sue Farrell, a Haverford football mother and Upper Darby teacher, came up with the idea of designing a T-shirt to commemorate the annual Thanksgiving game. The 1,000 T-shirts were available for sale as Haverford beat Upper Darby, 49-42, to win the Central League championship, and the proceeds benefited the Delaware County Interfaith Food Assistance Network.

Administered by Family and Community Services, this year's food drive collected $30,490 pounds of food, officials said.

"Both teams are champions for a worthy cause," County Council Chairman Mario J. Civera Jr. said. - Mari A. Schaefer
