ABINGTON TWP. The head of a New York City private college-prep school has been named chancellor of Pennsylvania State University's Abington campus.

Damian Fernandez will replace outgoing Chancellor Karen Wiley Sandler, who announced in June that she would retire after more than 20 years with Penn State.

Sandler will continue to work as chancellor at Penn State Abington until the end of June.

Fernandez is CEO and head of school at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York. He previously worked as a college administrator for the State University of New York system and at Florida International University.

"I am honored to work together to advance academic excellence, access, and community engagement," he said in a statement last week announcing his appointment as chancellor.
