Mrs. Halaby was born Doris Carlquist in Leavenworth, Wash., where her father was mayor. As a child, she moved with her family to Anchorage, decades before Alaska became a state. She was a political science graduate of the University of Washington.

She and her husband, who later became chairman of Pan American World Airways, raised three children, and divorced in 1977. Daughter Lisa married Jordan's King Hussein in 1978 and became known as Queen Noor. The king died in 1999.
