PennDOT says it will eliminate the use of registration stickers beginning Jan. 1, 2017, and automated license plate reader technology will help law enforcement verify expired registrations.

Here are five things to know about registration sticker elimination:

1. PennDOT says the move will allow customers to pay online from home or a mobile device, print and sign a permanent registration credential, eliminating the need to wait for delivery by mail.

2. Yes, you will still have to register your vehicle. The move simply eliminates the need to place a registration sticker on your license plate after Dec. 31.

3. PennDOT says a Penn State research study determined the elimination of the registration sticker will realize a cost savings to taxpayers of $1 million per year.

4. Law enforcement agencies have real-time electronic access to PennDOT's database from their patrol vehicles and will use license plate reader technology to validate car registrations.

5. The last registration sticker will be issued Dec. 30. You are not required to remove a sticker issued this year or any old sticker from your license plate.
