A University of Pennsylvania junior was struck and killed by a Market-Frankford Line train at the 40th Street station in West Philadelphia at the start of Monday's morning rush hour.

Penn officials identified the woman as Ao "Olivia" Kong, 21, a finance major in the Wharton School. She was a Philadelphia native and a graduate of Central High School.

The death was an apparent suicide, authorities said. In the last three years, 10 other Penn students have committed suicide.

Kong was a member of Phi Gamma Nu business fraternity and Alpha Phi Omega coed service fraternity. She studied last semester at the University of Melbourne in Australia.

Kong had been working as a finance intern at the Reinvestment Fund this semester.

Penn president Amy Gutmann said in a statement that Kong "was a bright, well-liked, and successful member of our junior class."

Kong was struck by an eastbound train at 6:59 a.m., SEPTA said. Service in both directions was halted for more than 21/2 hours between the 30th Street and 52nd Street stations. Riders had to depend on shuttle buses or find alternate transportation during the service disruption.

More than 200 students attended a memorial gathering at the university Monday afternoon.

In January, Penn confirmed that the death of engineering grad student Kyle Wilshusen was its 10th student suicide in three years.

Monday consistently has the highest suicide rates of any day of the week both nationally and in Philadelphia, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
