A 39-year-old police officer in Haverford Township died Sunday after a sudden illness, his department announced Tuesday.

William Albertus, a seven-year veteran of the force, suffered a medical emergency April 10 while playing ice hockey in a police league, said Chief John Viola.

Albertus, who was married with three young children, died of natural causes at Crozier-Chester Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized for a week, Viola said.

"He was a great family man," Viola said. "He was a really nice, easygoing guy."

Prior to joining the Haverford force, Albertus served for three years with the Philadelphia Police Department, where his brother is still an officer, Viola said.

A viewing is scheduled Friday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church, 617 S. Providence Rd. in Wallingford.

Another viewing is set for 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by a funeral mass at 11 at the church.

Burial will be at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, 1600 S. Sproul Rd., Springfield.
