Police: Father not charged in shooting of son, 38

A father who shot his adult son during an altercation Tuesday afternoon in the city's Mayfair section was released without being charged, police said.

A father who shot his adult son during an altercation Tuesday afternoon in the city's Mayfair section was released without being charged, police said.

The 38-year-old son was reported in stable condition at Aria Health-Torresdale Campus. The gun used in the shooting was registered to the 66-year-old father, who also had a valid carry permit, police said. Neither man was identified.

Shortly after 1 p.m. in the 3200 block of Princeton Avenue, the two were in the father's black 2012 Toyota Tacoma and were supposed to go to a doctor's appointment for the son. The son refused to go to the appointment and refused to go home, police said.

The son then attempted to get the father's gun from the vehicle's center console and took the keys to the Tacoma and threw them outside, police said.

The father grabbed the gun to keep it away from his son, exited the vehicle and attempted to call the police. Police said the son struck his father in the head. The father pushed his son away and fired the gun, striking his son in the chest, police said.

Witnesses called 911 and police recovered the gun and took the father into custody. The case was reviewed by the District Attorney's Office and the father was released "without charges at this time," police said.
