Pennsylvania residents who misplace their Social Security cards can now request replacements online.

The change, part of a Social Security Administration pilot program, means that getting a new card won't require someone to go to an agency office.

Residents of Pennsylvania, seven other states and the District of Columbia can now apply for replacements at http://socialsecurity.gov/myaccount, the agency announced this week.

The other states in the pilot initiative are Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, New Mexico, Washington and Wisconsin.

Pennsylvanians applying for new cards online can't request any changes to the card, must be 18 or older and must have a valid driver's license.

Officials said the number of states offering online card requests would expand throughout the year, and the effort should ease wait times at Social Security offices.
