Numerous road closures for Philadelphia bicycle race
As cyclists gear up for Sunday's Philadelphia International Cycling Classic, the professional bike race that features the Manayunk Wall, the city is preparing motorists for road closures for the event.
As cyclists gear up for Sunday's Philadelphia International Cycling Classic, the professional bike race that features the Manayunk Wall, the city is preparing motorists for road closures for the event.
The men's race starts at 8 a.m.
The women's race, which is part of the newly formed Women's World Tour, begins at 12:30 p.m.
The start and finish line for the race is on Ridge Avenue near the top of "The Wall" on Lyceum Avenue in Roxborough.
The race, which dates to 1985, will take cyclists on a 12.3 mile loop. The men will make nine circuits, a distance of 110.7 miles; the women will make six circuits, a distance of 73.8 miles.
The city on Tuesday said there will be a process of gradual road closures starting Friday.
The full set of closures on the course are scheduled to be in place by 7 a.m. Sunday and last until about 5 p.m. Sunday.
The following roads will be closed Sunday:
Ridge Avenue - School House Lane to Hermit Street
Main Street - Ridge Avenue to Green Lane
Levering Street - Main Street to Tower Street
Cresson Street - Levering Street to Cotton Street
Lyceum Avenue - Tower Street to Mitchell Street
Pechin Street - Green Lane to Roxborough Avenue
Roxborough Avenue - Mitchell Street to Terrace Street
Manayunk Ave. - Roxborough Avenue to Ridge Avenue
The entire length of Kelly Drive will be completely closed to all traffic and parking.
There will be no vehicle access to the Lemon Hill, Mount Pleasant, and Ormiston Mansions.
There will be no vehicle access to the Dairy and Edgely ball fields.
Vehicles, including bicycles, will not be permitted to enter the park at Dauphin Drive.
Vehicles entering at Diamond Drive will be given access up to Reservoir Drive only.
Vehicles entering the park at Oxford Drive will be permitted as far as the Smith Playground only.
Sedgley Drive will be closed at Girard Avenue. Brewery Hill Drive will be closed at Girard Avenue.
Poplar Drive will be closed at Poplar Street for traffic to Girard Avenue, with all traffic directed east on Poplar Street.
There will be no access to the Park from Hunting Park Avenue, the Roosevelt Expressway or Midvale Avenue.
There will be no parking on Waterworks Drive, or Lemon Hill.
In order to allow for setup of the racecourse, the following road closures will be in effect on the days and times listed:
Lyceum Avenue from Manayunk Avenue to Pechin Street from 8 a.m. Friday until the conclusion of bike race clean up.
Lyceum Avenue and Levering Street from Cresson Street to Pechin Street from 2 p.m. Friday until the conclusion of bike race clean up.
Delays can be expected and motorists are advised to avoid the area by using alternate routes, and allow for extra driving time in the areas near the racecourse before and during the race.
No parking will be allowed on closed streets.
Public Transportation
Due to race-related street closures, SEPTA Routes 9, 27, 32, 35, 38, 61, 65, 124/125, K & R will be detoured from their normal routes through Kelly Drive, Manayunk and Roxborough area beginning at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday 5 p.m. Sunday.
