2 teens on bike hurt in hit-run on North Broad Street

Two teens on the same bicycle were injured, one critically, early Friday when they were hit by a car that left the scene on North Broad Street in Spring Garden, police said.

The car, a red Lexus roadster, was found a short time later and the driver was taken into custody. Police said he smelled of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated.

Police said the victims, both 16, were riding on Broad Street with a group of other boys about 2 a.m. when their bicycle was struck near Wallace Street.

The force of the impact knocked the bicycle's front tire from its wheel hub and sent it flying 50 feet down the roadway, Chief Inspector Scott Small told reporters at the scene.

Both boys were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital, where one was in critical condition with head injuries and the other was being treated for a broken leg, officials said.

Provided with a description of the car, police found the Lexus, with front end damage consistent with the crash, on the 1300 block of Ridge Avenue, Small said. The driver and a female passenger were still in the car and taken to Police Headquarters to be questioned.
