A two-vehicle accident in Northeast Philadelphia Thursday morning killed a 68-year-old woman, police said Friday.

Gloria Szarek, of the 3400 block of Sheffield Avenue in Holmesburg, died shortly after the 2003 Nissan Maxima car she was driving was struck by a 2010 Ford F-250 pickup, driven by a 38-year-old man, at the intersection of Woodhaven and Knights Roads, police said.

About 11 a.m. Thursday, Szarek, who had a 6-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl in her car, was heading south on Knights Road when her car was struck by the pickup traveling west on the exit ramp on Woodhaven Road that crosses over Knights, police said.

The front of the truck struck the driver's side door of the Maxima, pushing the car into a guardrail, police said. Szarek was trapped in her car and had to be removed by the Fire Department.

She was taken to Aria Health-Torresdale Campus, where she died at 12:22 p.m. Thursday, police said. The two children were taken to the same hospital and treated for minor scrapes and abrasions, police said.

The pickup driver stayed at the scene. The police department's Accident Investigation District is investigating. It was not immediately known if any charges or citations would be filed against the pickup driver, whose name was not released.
