Dog bites man and woman in S. Philly is shot by police

A police officer shot and killed a dog that attacked a man and a woman Tuesday night in the Point Breeze section of South Philadelphia, police said.

About 8 p.m., police received a call about a dog attacking a woman in the area of South 16th and Dickinson Street, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

An officer arriving on the scene saw a pit bull biting a 28-year-old man in the hand in the 1500 block of Dickinson, Small said. The officer was unable to kick the dog away, so he shot it once, killing it. The man was bit on the finger but refused medical treatment.

Police then found out that a 28-year-old woman was bit in both hands by the dog at 16th and Dickinson before the dog attacked the man, who was walking his own dog. The woman was taken the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she was reported in stable condition.

Small said the pit bull did not appear to be a stray, but no one in the neighborhood had come to claim it as of 9:30 p.m. - Robert Moran
