While visiting the fifth floor of the Criminal Justice Center late Wednesday morning, he spotted part of a police officer's uniform - jacket, badge and hat - sitting unattended on a bench outside a courtroom.

The man stuffed the jacket and hat inside a Macy's bag and promptly left the Center City courthouse.

The entire impromptu caper was caught - obviously, since it happened inside the courthouse - on surveillance video.

A 25th District officer had left the items outside courtroom 503 as he prepared to testify in a case. He went inside at 11:50 a.m. and returned 15 minutes later to find his gear gone.

The thief entered the Criminal Justice Center at 11:46 a.m. Surveillance video shows that he was on the fifth floor for about seven minutes. He was last seen walking towards Broad Street at 12:01 p.m.

The suspect is a black man, about 40 to 50 years old, with a salt-and-pepper beard and mustache, wearing a tan New York Yankees cap, tan jacket, tan pants, red vest, white short, and boots.

Anyone with information should call 911 or text a tip to PPD TIP or 772847.
