An 11-year-old girl remained hospitalized in critical condition Sunday with a gunshot wound in the back of her head, suffered, police said, when a gun her 14-year-old brother was playing with accidentally discharged.

The teen told police that he went into his parents' bedroom to play with a .38-caliber revolver Saturday. Police said a bullet went through the front bedroom door, 15 feet into a wall and ricocheted, striking his sister as she stood in the doorway of her bedroom.

The incident took place at about 4:48 p.m. on the 6000 block of Charles Street in the city's Wissinoming section.

The victim was transported by police to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, where she underwent surgery. She was listed Sunday in critical but stable condition.

The 14-year-old told officers that he had gone into his parents' room and took the gun without permission.

No charges have been filed but police are continuing to investigate.
