PERUGIA, Italy - In an Italian appeals courtroom, a jury partially overturned the murder charge
in the trial of Amanda Knox over the killing of Meredith Kercher.

Knox was found not guilty of killing Kercher, but was found to be guilty on charges of defamation. She will be released from custody.

Just before the jury began its deliberations, Knox tearfully claimed she did not kill her British roommate, pleading for them to free her so she can return to the United States after four years behind bars.

Knox and co-defendant Raffaele Sollecito, Knox's former boyfriend from Italy, were convicted in 2009 of sexually assaulting and murdering Kercher, who was stabbed to death in her bedroom. Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison, Sollecito to 25. They both denied wrongdoing.

Philly.com will have more on the verdict and the reactions it has engendered as details become available.
