Ex-Merchantville tax collector sentenced A former Merchantville tax collector who stole payments from borough residents was put on house arrest Thursday and banned from public employment.

Michelle McKinney, 36, of Brooklawn, pleaded guilty to theft in March and was sentenced Thursday by Superior Court Judge Irvin Snyder in Camden. After 364 days of house arrest, McKinney will be on probation for five years and must return $72,480. She forfeits her ability to hold public office.

The borough could pursue civil action to seek reimbursement if an audit finds that more money is missing, authorities said.

Between February and November 2009, McKinney kept cash payments totaling $72,480. She began working in the borough tax office in 2004 and became tax collector in 2008.
