A 10-year-old girl and her 7-year-old brother are in critical condition after a truck crashed into them as they crossed a busy Far Northeast intersection on their way home from school this afternoon.
The children were headed west on Byberry Road crossing Academy on their walk home from the Decatur School, about three blocks up Academy Road from the intersection, police said. Based on a preliminary investigation and witness accounts, police believe a 2003 Dodge Ram driven by a 20-year-old woman was driving east on Byberry Road and struck the kids while making a left turn onto Academy, Chief Inspector Scott Small said. Both the children and the vehicle had the green light at the time.
At 3:12 p.m., numerous 9-1-1 calls reporting the accident began pouring in to police from people at the heavily traveled intersection, which has businesses, including a Wawa gas station and a 7-Eleven, on all corners, Small said.
Ambulances took both children, who were suffering head trauma, to Aria Health's Torresdale hospital, Small said. Both were later transferred to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, where they remained in critical condition around 6:30 p.m.
Police said the little girl is expected to survive, but her brother's condition is more serious. The little boy suffered a fractured skull in the accident, according to investigators.
The young woman who drove the Dodge Ram remained at the scene and was visibly shaken, Small said. She did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and had not been driving recklessly, according to police and witnesses' statements to officers. The Ram had visible front-end damage on the driver's side, police said.
The driver was not expected to be charged with a crime. Accident Investigation officers were at the scene.
"It appears there's no foul play involved," Small said. "It's just a tragic accident at this time."
