Guardrail skewers car, killing Del. woman

A 22-year-old woman was killed early Sunday when a guardrail skewered the car in which she was riding during a crash in Glasgow, Del.

A 22-year-old woman was killed early Sunday when a guardrail skewered the car in which she was riding during a crash in Glasgow, Del.

Police said Jazmyn Lewis was the front-seat passenger of a 2006 Dodge Charger being driven by Ernest McGill Jr. in the left lane of southbound South College Avenue, north of Pulaski Highway.

Around 3:30 a.m., McGill's vehicle drifted off the left side of the roadway and into the grass median, its front passenger side striking the end of a metal guardrail, according to investigators.

Police said the guardrail punctured the car, ejecting Lewis from the rear windshield.

Lewis, of Bear, was pronounced dead at the scene.

McGill, 26, of Wilmington, was treated for minor injuries at the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center, investigators said.

Police said it wasn't immediately clear what caused him to lose control of the car, but that both speed and alcohol use were being considered as factors in the crash.

The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit was continuing to investigate the incident Sunday.
