Investigators said the incident happened shortly after midnight outside a home on the 1000 block of North Leithgow Street.
A 44-year-old man was just about to enter his house when an unknown man walked up behind him and struck him on the back of the head with a plastic bag that had a large rock inside, according to police.
Police said the suspect then rifled through the victim's pockets, taking an iPhone 4S and a wallet containing identification and $55 in cash.
The victim was rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition with a severe head wound.
The suspect is described as a 5-foot-9-inch tall black male in his 40s with a slim to medium build and a beard with no mustache.
Police said Saturday afternoon the investigation remained ongoing, and that no arrests had yet been made.
