A man died early Thursday during a house fire in the Nicetown section of North Philadelphia.

The blaze broke out inside a home along the 1900 block of Brunner Street shortly before 12:30 a.m. and was placed under control in about 16 minutes, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department. Crews recovered the body of an adult male from inside the home.

The 37-year-old was found on the first floor near the front door, WPVI-TV reported. The Fire Department was unable to confirm the victim's age or provide additional information about the circumstances surrounding his death Thursday morning.

Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer told reporters at the scene that the home had no working smoke alarms.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Thursday.
