A woman was struck and killed by a PATCO train in Center City this morning, shutting down service for thousands of commuters heading to work during the morning rush.

The woman was not immediately identified, and officials said police were reviewing video of the incident to determine if the woman jumped or fell onto the tracks in front of a westbound train at about 8:30 a.m.

Service was suspended for more than hour after the person was struck.

PATCO said normal trackwork-adjusted service fully resumed at about 2:30 p.m.

Earlier, trains had bypassed the 8th and Market streets station and were operating on an emergency schedule, with trains every 26 minutes.

The incident caused a major disruption for PATCO riders during the morning commute. Many riders faced lengthy delays, and trains heading toward 8th and Market were being sent back eastbound.
