Police officer injured responding to teen mob in Center City

A police officer suffered minor injuries after responding to a report of hundreds of teenagers causing havoc Monday evening in Center City, police said.

Police were called to the area of the 1500 block of Chestnut Street shortly before 5:30 to respond to a large group of teens fighting, police said. The officer was hurt as police tried to control the crowd.

Further incidents were reported in the area, and a number of juveniles were taken into custody for disorderly conduct and failing to disperse.

SEPTA Transit Police Chief Thomas J. Nestel III said his officers made 10 arrests.

Police Commissioner Richard Ross said Tuesday morning, police were awaiting a decision from the District Attorney's Office on possible aggravated assault charges against four teens.

"It was a half-day for schools today, but we have this problem every day. Today was admittedly the worst that I have seen," Nestel said.
