Police are investigating the death of a worker who was struck and killed by a tractor Friday afternoon at the Cherry Island Landfill in Wilmington, Del.

Jose Luis Garcia-Hernandez, 42, was standing behind a Caterpillar D6R LGP crawler tractor as coworker Aaron Harley, 52, used it to push trash into a large pile, Delaware State Police said in a news release.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m., Harley backed the machine into Garcia-Hernandez, causing him to suffer fatal injuries, police said.

Garcia-Hernandez, of Newark, Del., was pronounced dead at the scene.

The state police Collision Reconstruction Unit was continuing to review the incident Friday evening.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration also had plans to conduct an investigation, police said.
