Prosecutors: N.J. motorist hits man, continues driving with victim through windshield

Prosecutors say a New Jersey motorist is facing DUI charges after hitting a pedestrian, then continuing to drive with the victim stuck in his vehicle's windshield.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said 33-year-old Marcos Ortega struck a man who was in the shoulder of the road while he was driving north on Route 9 near South Main Street in Ocean Township on Monday evening.

The Little Egg Harbor man then allegedly continued driving, traveling for about 1.5 miles before being stopped by a patrol officer who had been alerted to reports of an erratic driver.

When the officer spotted Ortega's car, he "observed a person halfway through the vehicle's windshield," the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

The victim, 61-year-old Kenneth Moeller, of Lanoka Harbor, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He remains listed in critical condition, authorities said.

Field sobriety tests indicated Ortega was impaired, officials said.

Prosecutors said today that he is being charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash and causing serious bodily injury to another while driving under the influence.
