2 rescued after small plane crashes into Delaware River

Two people were rescued from the water Saturday morning after a small plane crashed in the Delaware River between Delaware and New Jersey.

The air traffic control tower at the New Castle Airport reported losing contact with a single-engine aircraft shortly before 11 a.m., Delaware State Police said in a news release.

The aircraft was found in the Delaware River between Fort Delaware State Park in Delaware City and Fort Mott State Park in Salem County, N.J.

A Delaware State Police helicopter rescued two people from the water and took them to shore for medical evaluation. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the crash. Police said the investigation remained ongoing Saturday afternoon.
