La Salle College High School sports star killed in Iraq

The Defense Department announced today that Marine First Lt. Travis L. Manion of Doylestown, a former standout athlete at La Salle College High School, was killed Sunday in Iraq.

The Defense Department announced today that Marine First Lt. Travis L. Manion of Doylestown, a former standout athlete at La Salle College High School, was killed Sunday in Iraq.

Manion, 26, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, died while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, according to a news release.

He was assigned to First Reconnaissance Battalion, First Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

A three-sport athlete in high school, Manion was named to the "all-Catholic" roster in football, lacrosse and wrestling. He was a member of four championship teams. He continued to wrestle at the Naval Academy.

According to his family, he was on his second tour of duty in Iraq. He went there in September 2005 and remained until last April. He went again in December, the day after Christmas.
