Phillies fans heading to the ballpark early by subway were temporarily detoured for a brief while this afternoon as SEPTA investigated reports of smoke at the Ellsworth Federal Station in South Philadelphia.
The stop, which had been evacuated, is halfway between the Broad/Locust and Pattison stations, said SEPTA spokesman Gary Fairfax. Passengers were being bused between the Walnut/Locust and Pattison Stations, Fairfax said.
Normal operation resumed by about 1:15 p.m.
SEPTA will still operate the Sports Express Trains from the Fern Rock Station at 1:55 and 2:05 p.m to the South Philadelphia sports complex, where the Phillies have a 3 p.m. playoff game.
"This didn't occur at the most opportune time, and we do apologize," Fairfax said. "The most important thing is we need all the Phillies fans in their seats for the first pitch."
