Off-duty officer hurt by hit-run drunk driver

An off-duty Philadelphia police officer was badly injured early Sunday when he was hit by a drunk driver while walking on Academy Road, police said.

The name of the 44-year-old officer, who is on family medical leave from his job, was withheld by the police Accident Investigation Division. He was reported in critical condition yesterday at the Torresdale campus of Frankford Hospital.

Police said that Jeffery Winarski, 25, of Croydon, was driving a vehicle that struck the officer about 3:30 a.m. in the 10800 block of Academy Road. Police said Winarski left the scene of the accident, but stopped and returned. They said he was charged with driving under the influence.
